Steve Smyk Files to Run for 6th Senate District

Georgetown, DE – On Friday, April 1, 2022, Representative Steve Smyk (R – Milton) officially filed to run for the 6th Senate District. The seat is currently held by Senator Ernesto B. López (R – Lewes), who last summer announced he would be retiring and not seeking re-election to a fourth term in office.

“I am honored to know and have worked together with Rep. Smyk for the last decade,” Sen. López said. “The people of the 20th Rep. District are fortunate to have a dedicated public servant as their State Representative, and I am confident that his bipartisan approach to problem solving, and priority placed on constituent service will ensure the Cape Region continues to have a strong voice and effective representation in the Delaware State Senate.”

“I am proud of the work I have accomplished during my tenure as a member of the Delaware House of Representatives,” Rep. Smyk said in a statement. “I look forward to continuing my service as a member of the state senate serving the wonderful constituents of the 6th District.”

On Sunday, April 3, 2022, Friends for Steve Smyk hosted a successful campaign launch and fundraiser at Big Oyster Brewery in Lewes. Over 300 attendees came to support Rep. Smyk’s candidacy including law enforcement personnel, small business owners and registered voters consisting of Republicans, Democrats and Independents.

“I was humbled to see so many friends take time from their lives to support this campaign,” Rep. Smyk exclaimed. “I am excited to hit the campaign trail and to start working on behalf of the constituents in the 6th District.”

Rep. Smyk has served the 20th Representative District since 2012, when the district was redrawn into Sussex County from New Castle County following the 2010 United States census.

The 6th Senate District includes Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach, Lewes, and Milton. Prime Hook has been added to the district following the 2020 Census.
