Between 2019 and 2021 a total of 7,574 firearm charges where a crimes was committed were dropped by the State of Delaware. Over that three year period that was a total of 65% of the total crime arrests that involved a firearm. In 2020 that percentage was higher than 70%.
When the State does not enforce the laws on the books, it sends a message that our justice system does not care about rising violence and the havoc these gun crimes play on our communities. Prohibited laws that largely effect responsible gun owners from the General Assembly since I have been in office have for the most part been feel good measures without addressing the root causes of violence or the State’s failure to keep criminals off the street.
Many are focusing their attention in the wrong direction. Take the criminals off our streets, hold them accountable, and send a message to others that if you commit a crime with a firearm the charge will not be dropped. Victim rights and the safety of our neighborhoods should be paramount.
There are many multilayered approaches needed to be rebuilding our communities and without basic accountability the criminal will prevail every time.
