State Police Issue Scam Warning

Posted on 03-13-2021

Delaware State Police have received reports that citizens are getting phone calls from scammers posing as family members in trouble and in need of financial assistance.

While similar cons have been reported in the past, these most recent attempts involve a new wrinkle. After the victim is instructed to withdraw a large amount of money, a courier arrives at the residence to collect the cash.

Police officials remind citizens to be cautious and immediately attempt to independently verify the status of the family member in question. Never assume the request for money is valid just because the caller provides a few correct details.

Indicators of scam calls are threats, please not to hang up, and tactics intended to build a sense of urgency. Additional information on phone scams can be found at: https://www.fcc.gov/general/frauds-scams-and-alerts-guides
