Peace Officers Memorial Day in the United States

Please join our Sussex Teen Age Republicans at your local law enforcement department.
 Dear STARS,

May 15th is Peace Officers Memorial Day in the United States.  In October 1962 President John F. Kennedy signed a law designation this date as a national observance.  Each year since the Presidents have made a proclamation to honor the men and women in law enforcement that have lost their lives or been injured in the line of duty.  Government agencies are requested to lower the United States flag to half-mast and to encourage government and the public to observe this day with events that honor their sacrifice.

As of April, this year 90 U.S. officers have been killed which according to the Officer Down Memorial Page is a 91% increase over last year. There have been 24,824 all time in line of duty deaths in the US.

What can WE do to show our appreciation to our local law enforcement agencies and boost moral???

Last year we staged a sign waving event at the Dagsboro Police Department for National Thank A Police Officer Day” on September 19th.

Please think of ideas and reply to this email and let me know your thoughts on what we as a group would like to do and for which police department? Last year we also brought snacks, cards and “thin blue line” tumblers for each police officer of the Dagsboro PD.

Other ideas:

·      Wear blue clothing in support of law enforcement.

·      Send a card/letter of commendation or support of the law enforcement agency or of an officer to their HQ.

·      As an individual or group send a card/letter of commendation or support of the law enforcement agency or of an individual officer to their HQ.

·      Encourage local schools to give a civics lesson or morning announcement to inform their students about this national event to remember and honor the law enforcement officers who have given their lives in the line of duty.

·      What is most important, if you see a police officer, thank a police officer.

·      Put a blue ribbon on your mailbox or your car’s door handle.

Send me your ideas and we will do something!!
