DOVER — Standing before a receptive audience of about 75 supporters Wednesday, Republican Lee Murphy formally announced his candidacy to take Delaware’s lone U.S. representative seat in the 2022 election.
Mr. Murphy, 69, previously said he intended to run for the office during the GOP’s state convention in March. This time, he stood in front of the Old State House on The Green and pledged to represent the First State with an open style and workmanlike effort.
“I promise to defend an honor the Constitution every single day I’m on the job,” he said. “I promise to represent all the good citizens of Delaware with honor and integrity every single day on the job.
“I promise to do the work you’ve sent me there to do.
“I will surround myself with the very best of the people I have working me on this campaign … they couldn’t be any better.”
Democrat Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester currently holds the office Mr. Murphy is seeking. The primary is set for September of next year, followed by the general election in November 2022.
