The General Assembly briefly entered special session after midnight on July 1 before recessing until the call of the chair. That procedural move is necessary under the Delaware Constitution to allow the House (and Senate) to be able to call their respective chambers back into special session later if necessary.
In this case, there will be a need for a special session this fall. Decennial U.S. Census data is expected to be sent to the states this summer or fall, enabling the General Assembly to conduct its mandated legislative redistricting. The House and Senate will need to enter a special session this fall to approve new legislative districts for the next 10 years, beginning with the 2022 elections.
More information will be provided once it’s determined when Delaware will receive its Census data.
